Welcome to the first segment of our Welcome to the B-Side series, chronicling our journey as we work toward becoming a Certified B Corporation.
Why the B-Side?
Well, if you’ve ever noticed how many of the best songs are one the B-side?? We find that it seems so are some of the best businesses!
First off, what the heck is a B Corp anyway?!?!?
Certified B Corporations are leading a global movement of people using business as a force for good.
B Corps meet the highest standards of overall social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability and aspire to use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.
The goal is that one day all companies compete to be not only the Best in the world, but the Best for the World.
”Business as a force for good.” —That is a sentence worth saying over and over.
Blackbird was built from the realization that benefits could be done better, with a much greater focus on human connection and inclusion. So, when we learned about the B Corp world, we were thrilled to find a community of mission-driven businesses that are working every day to embody the values we are driven by.
Going through the B Corp assessment/certification process has been a rigorous and interesting ride, but it’s a beautiful process to reflect on the type of business we want to create for our employees, your employees, and the greater community.
The B Corp assessment takes us on a deep dive through key areas of our business:
Governance (Mission & Engagement, Ethics & Transparency)
Workers (Financial Security, Health, Wellness, Safety, Career Development, Engagement & Satisfaction)
Community (Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion, Economic Impact, Civic Engagement & Giving, Supply Chain Management)
Environment (Air & Climate, Water, Land & Life)
Working through each of these areas gives us the opportunity to reflect deeply on our practices and core beliefs, and take intentional steps to do our best as an organization – and that feels pretty great.
Another positive aspect in going through this process, is it naturally positions us to become an employer of choice because of the investment we are making to our employees and community – and that feels pretty great too.
Where we are today:
We’re 97% of the way through our assessment and we are gearing up to hit ‘submit’ by the end of this week!
The B Impact assessment serves to verify social and environmental performance, and ensure that B Corps walk the talk. To meet the performance requirement to certify, a company must earn a minimum verified sore of 80 points.
In looking at our dashboard, we’re pretty psyched to be looking at an overall preliminary score of 86.7, which will be verified by the B Lab team during the interview process where we’ll discuss our assessment answers. We’re pleased to see we’re rocking it in our mission to serve the community, but a bit surprised to see where we’re ranking on environmental impact.
Our environmental footprint is extremely small, but working primarily out of a virtual office makes it a bit more difficult to measure. However, environmental impact is something we care deeply about, so we’re reaching out to our awesome friends in the B Corp community to learn more about how we can increase our positive impact as we finalize our assessment.
We’ll report back as we learn more – stay tuned!
In the meantime, check out the B-Side to The Kinks, All Day and All Night, for a little Monday motivation!
